Spain, 2009 Mr. Rifkin was invited by Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero of Spain to join his “Advisory Committee of Progressive Intellectuals”, an international panel of 14 experts put together to counsel the Spanish Socialist party on issues related to economic growth, energy renewal and social integration. During the two day meeting of the Committee, Mr. Rifkin counseled Prime Minister Zapatero on addressing climate change and energy security by implementing a Third Industrial Revolution, a three part plan of developing renewable energies, storing them with hydrogen and other storage technologies, and distributing the power via distributed grid technologies. Other prominent members of the Committee include Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz, Australian anti-nuclear expert and Nobel Laureate Helen Caldicott, ex-Senior Vice President of the World Bank, Nicolas Stern, and Maria Joao Rodriguez, an architect of the EU’s Lisbon Agenda.
